Republican means moved 1.5 to 6 times as far as Democratic
Source. Voteview, party mean change, 80th and 95th to 119th Congress
Method and data
Method. Mean of nominate_dim1 in the 119th minus the mean in the base Congress, by chamber and party. The 95th (1977) is the main base because the gap stayed between 0.48 and 0.60 in both chambers from the 80th through the 95th and every later Congress is above its 95th value; the 80th (1947) is the first Congress of the exhibit’s window. Republican share of the rise in the gap is 62% (House) and 60% (Senate) from the 80th, 71% and 68% from the 85th, and 76% and 86% from the 95th. Each member has one score for a whole career, so the change reflects who served. Rows, Delegates and independents are treated as in Exhibit 17.
