Measuring the Economy

These studies ask how the same economy produces different official numbers, and what a reader should do about it. Study I sets nine measures of inflation side by side; in July 2026 they disagreed by 1.22 percentage points. Study II reads the majority and minority accounts that the Joint Economic Committee has bound into one report in nearly every year since 1948, and Study III takes four answers to one question and finds a documented cause for each gap.

  1. Study I

    Which Inflation?

Nine published measures of inflation: in July 2026 they disagreed by 1.22 percentage points.

  2. Study II

    Two Reports, One Economy

In nearly every year since 1948 the Joint Economic Committee has bound the majority's account of the economy and the minority's into one document.

  3. Study III

    The Same Question, Different Numbers

Four credible estimates give four answers to one question, and in every case the gap has a documented cause.
